?!?!?!?!? German Banking

Apparently with the German banking system you can only deposit money at the branch where you set up an account. So you need to set up your account at a convenient branch. If you move you close your account and open another one close to your new home?!?!?!?!?

Depositing at an ATM (or Gelbautomat) is unheard of.

And, if you are lazy and withdraw cash from another bank's ATM you will pay €5 for the privilage!!!!!!

UPDATE
well we are now banking with Deutsche Bank who are GREAT. We can deposit at any branch and at some ATMs, they have longer opening hours, english internt banking site, and the list goes on. If any of you need a German bank account go with DB, and tell them we recommended you - we get a present ;-)

Is the present money?

We're gonna be needing this sooner rather than later - anything in particular we need to say when we tell them you sent us?
Also - what's their english website?

Cheers

The present unfortunately isn't money, but they have list of things, if we get two recommendations we get can get a DVD player.

I am not sure what you have to say. I imagine it is fairly straight forward, but I have asked our relocation consutltant, who went with us to the bank to translate, to see if she knows. When I found out I will let you know.

The english website seems to be http://www.deutsche-bank.de/index_e.htm

Other good thing - they have a whole lot of free ATM withdrawl arrangements with variuos banks in Europe and in other places, and we can withdraw for free from Westpac ATMs at home incase there is money left :-)

Other tip - we didn't think about the cost of withdrawing money or transfering it before we left (so many other whtings to organise) so you might want to chck with some banks in Aus to see if any have good international transfer accounts. (Commonwealth has been advertising one)
